Cannabidiol Demonstrates Therapeutic Benefit for Multiple SclerosisAugust 30, 2018
According to a new study published in Frontiers in Immunology, cannabidiol has been reported to exhibit anti-inflammatory and neuroprotective effects, demonstrating a potential therapeutic benefit for individuals with autoimmune diseases, including Multiple Sclerosis. MS is a debilitating autoimmune disease in which inflammatory lesions cause damage to the myelin sheath that coats the nerve fibers in the central nervous system, leading to symptoms ranging from numbness in a limb to paralysis.
Using an experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE) mouse model, the researchers examined CBD-induced effects on autoimmune neuroinflammation. The researchers administered daily 20 mg doses of CBD into the abdomen every day for 25 days.
The mice treated with CBD demonstrated reduced signs of EAE, decreased T-cell infiltration, and reduced levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines. The researchers found that CBD treatment led to a significant increase in the production of myeloid-derived suppressor cells (MDSCs) in EAE mice. This is important because recent studies have suggested that MDSCs play a critical role in suppressing neuroinflammation.
CBD successfully slowed the progression of the disease. This is important research for anyone who is dealing with the debilitating symptoms of Multiple Sclerosis and gives hope to many who are suffering.
