Cannabis Has Been Used Since Ancient Times
Since ancient times, cannabis has played an important role in humanity’s development. For thousands of years, cannabis was not only legal, but an important crop among cultures throughout history, and held commercial, medicinal, and spiritual value.
Prior to 1937 in the United States (and 1928 in the United Kingdom), cannabis had enjoyed a 5,000 year run as a therapeutic plant with no history of illegality.
The Endocannabinoid System
All Mammals on the planet have an Endocannabinoid System or ECS with receptors in our bodies that recognize cannabis compounds.
The ECS has CB1 receptors in the brain and nervous system and CB2 receptors in the gut organs and immune system. The ECS is one of the largest receptor systems in the body.
The job of the ECS is to help maintain homeostasis, meaning balance. The chemical compounds that bind to ECS receptors are called cannabinoids.
There is a strong theory among some researchers that ECS deficiency may contribute to disease. This may explain why cannabinoids are effective at relieving certain conditions like epilepsy.
